Use Policies:
Access to these facilities is a privilege, not a right. Please respect the facility, the technology and the staff, and operate the machines in accordance with the following rules:
1. Authorized Users: Only currently enrolled students in the Honors Program and New Century College may use the computer lab. Users must show their GMU ID when entering the lab.
2. Food and drink: No food or drink allowed.
3. Noise: Please don't shout, talk loudly, or otherwise disturb others working in the lab; turn down the volume, or use earphones if you are working with sound.
4. Editing: Editing of any system settings (desktop, icons, background/wallpaper, changes in font, etc.) is prohibited. Under no circumstances are students to change the system settings or wiring setups for machines. Do not change drivers, hookups or other key components of these machines.
5. Downloads: Do not download or install software on any of these machines.
6. Printing: Be a responsible user of the printers. Do not send a job to the printer more than once; wait for your job to be printed. Do not print multiple copies. If you take someone else's print job out of the printer, place it in the box so designated. The scanner is not to be used for color printing; color printing can be purchased through STAR services.
7. Storage: These machines can and will be erased and rebuilt without prior notice (which means if you have downloaded software or saved files, they will be deleted!) Use floppy disks or 100 mg zip disks only, which can be purchased at Patriot Computers. Student work may not be stored on these computers.
8. Games: Game playing is prohibited. The computers are for academic work only.
9. Copyright: These machines are not to be used to violate or infringe copyrights. Commercial images and text are copyrighted, and their use by students at an educational institution does not mean that the educational fair use doctrine automatically applies. 10. Responsible Computing Policy: Individuals must abide by University rules regarding the responsible use of computers, including respecting privacy, using computers for educational priorities, and abiding by relevant legal guidelines. 11. Classroom Lab: The classroom area must be reserved by contacting Donna Sadler, 3-2248, or email dsadler1@gmu.edu. When the classroom area is not in use by a class, it may be used as a drop-in area.
12. Special Requests: All requests must be addressed to the Lab Administrator, Donna Sadler.
13. Consequences: A student violating any of these rules will be warned. Habitual violators will be banned from the lab.
